Calvert Memorial Hospital Chief Nursing Executive Robert McWhirt was among the six nurses from the DC, Maryland and Virginia region recognized at the 2008 Nursing Spectrum Excellence Awards Gala earlier this month. McWhirt, who is vice president of patient care services at CMH, took top honors in the community service category.

Nominated by their peers, the winners were chosen from 30 finalists in six different categories for their outstanding contributions. McWhirt was nominated by Terri Polick, a behavioral health nurse at CMH.

"Bob is a dynamic nursing leader within our community who enjoys giving to others," said Polick. "I wanted him to recognized for his selfless service."

McWhirt started a non-profit, free karate program for kids in underserved communities nine years ago. He teaches two hours a night, four nights a week and participates in special weekend events. Currently, there are about 150 participants. All must keep their grades up to continue.

McWhirt also volunteers as a United Way board member and speaks at area high schools about the dangers of drinking and driving.

"Bob is leading by example," said Polick. "He is showing nurses that we truly have the power to improve the lives of others by participating in community service activities."

McWhirt joined CMH as manager of the emergency department in 1998. In 2002, he was promoted to executive director of nursing operations. Two years later he was promoted to vice president. In his current role, he oversees all clinical operations related to direct patient care.

McWhirt is a graduate of Hahnemann University and earned his bachelor's degree in nursing. He went on to obtain a master's degree in nursing administration and a doctorate in health services management. He and his wife, Liz, have three sons – Chris, Andrew and Bobby and live in St. Leonard.
